Mahatma Gandhi understood that the very backbone of India was its villages. Unless the village economy could be reformed, nothing could be achieved on the economic front. In his  bid to resurrect the rural economy of India. Gandhi also strongly believed that laziness and lack of work can cause immense physical and spiritual deprivation among the populace. It is impossible to ignite the masses towards a whole life if  they are weak, both physically and morally.

But for resurgence of  rural empowerment  some basic need has to be fulfilled immediately. That will give strength and courage to the rural people to standup and face the life with resolution. Gram Janakalyan Sanstha (GJKS) aims to help by taking the following activities at start for Rural EmPowerment(Repower)

A) Food ,Housing , Clothing

Everyone need  food, clothing, housing as first priority to live  without which  sickness, disability will develop which is  beyond his control

Adequate food
Poverty may lead to under nutrition, and under nutrition is likely to deepen poverty.
GJKS will develop distributing centers for this basic needs  and  try  to cover maximum people within the available resources . The aim is to

(i)  Make available  food in sufficient quantity and quality to satisfy the dietary needs of all individuals in a form that is culturally acceptable;
(ii) the accessibility of food in ways that are sustainable and do not interfere with the enjoyment of other human rights.

Housing
Most poor people are disadvantaged and endangered by the places and physical conditions in which they live. They experience precarious shelter, problems of overcrowding, sewage and pollution, seasonal exposure to the worst conditions, insecurity of person and property, remoteness, non-existent or inadequate infrastructure, including in terms of access to drinking water, and stigma. Poor housing reflects - and deepens - deprivation.

The aim of  GJKS - to make shelters in different location so that the old & deprived can protect them form weather and live under a roof

Food, Housing and Clothing

Clothing
Adequate clothing forms an important part  of everyone for civilized living and sickness. The type of clothing to be made available to those in need, in particular the poor, depends on the respective cultural, climatic and other conditions in the area  As a minimum, poor people will get adequate  clothes that enable them to appear in public without shame. GJKS will distribute clothes to the needy

B) Medicine & Health Care

People-doctor ratio six times lower in rural India in comparison to cities. Due to physical, social and cultural distance from medical facilities, people tend to depend on unqualified quacks who often provide “irrational treatment”

In India investment in healthcare was only 0.9% of the total GDP. India is a country was people are  are not getting the treatment for  most basic diseases. GJKS will organize clinics in different areas which are remote to the existing facilities.  These clinics will  organize camps in different small villages. Provide medical checkup, give medicine, refer to hospital for more serious cases etc

C) Clean Water & Sanitation

There can be little doubt that water is a basic necessity for the survival of humans. There is interplay of various factors that govern access and utilisation of water resources and in light of the increasing demand for water it becomes important to look for holistic and people-centered approaches for water management The WHO recommends that 5 per cent of a nation’s GDP be earmarked for investments in the health sector. However, public health expenditure in India has declined from 1.3 per cent of its GDP in 1990 to 0.9 per cent of its GDP in 1999. The National Rural Health Mission of the Government of India has set the target of rising public spending on health from 0.9 per cent of its GDP to 2-3 per cent of its GDP.18 In India, 60-80 per cent of the resources in the health system is spent on hospital care, leaving a much lower proportion for basic services. In addition, the focus is on urban-curative services, leaving rural areas more vulnerable.

.

A direct relationship exists between water, sanitation, health, nutrition and human well being. Consumption of contaminated drinking water, improper disposal of human excreta, lack of personal and food hygiene and improper disposal of solid and liquid waste have been the major causes of diseases in our country. There has been a key focus in various government programmes like the Total Sanitation Campaign to spread the message of maintaining personal hygiene for reducing water pollution.

Water purification can be carried out at the household level and at the community level. When one is talking about community based water purification systems, issues of ownership and equitable distribution becomes important. Social factors can play a role in determining access to water. In case of community based water purification systems, there  should be a mechanism of contribution by the community and they can be made responsible for maintenance to ensure sustainability.

GJKS  make awareness campaign  and organize brackish  water purification equipment and cheap sanitation facility to all in the covered area .

D) Clean  Energy & Environment

After 60 years of independence around 60% of our rural population live in very primitive conditions. They have no electricity and their lives are in darkness.  They use inefficient kerosene lanterns for light and primitive and ancient biomass cook stoves for cooking.  Modern technology somehow has not touched their lives.  Besides their poor quality, these devices used by them create tremendous household pollution. Thus there are estimates that around 1.5 million deaths per year in rural areas are attributable to inhaling smoke from the inefficient and primitive biomass stoves.

There is a serious energy crisis in India.  In various states there is tremendous shortage of electricity. All the energy problems can be solved by producing energy forest and agriculture wase route.  The farming can become remunerative only when it is tied very closely to industry. This can happen when farms also produce energy besides food. Thus when the major demand of fuel and electricity of the country is met by the farm then wealth will automatically flow into rural areas.

In any agriculture only 25-40% of the produce is food. Rest 60-75% are the agricultural residues. Any marginal farm can produce agricultural residues even if the main food crop fails.  On an average a farmer can get an extra income of Rs. 2000-4000/acre from the residues alone if they are used for producing energy.  This income can give him benefits even in case of a distress sale of his crop. Today about 600 million tons/year of agricultural residues are produced in India.  Most of these residues are burnt in the fields as a solution to the waste disposal problem. This not only wastes the precious resource but also produces tremendous air pollution.

E) Basic Education &  Self Help Training

Around 54% of India’s population is below 25 years of age and most of them live in rural areas and are unemployed. Creation of rural based enterprises is the best way to create wealth, improve their quality of life and bring these people into mainstream of development.  Our leaders are talking about making India the third biggest economy by 2012.  Unless the lives of rural population are improved this will not be possible

There is a Chinese saying “You can feed a person for a short time by supplying him fish, but if you teach him how to catch fish he will feed himself the rest of his life”. Thus if we train the people which can help in developing rural employment in  the countryside without much government support, then automatically the rural  lot will become better and will help in rural development.

F)   Custom & Religion

Development of Religious life &  moral upliftment

Faith in God plays a very important part in our day to day work , our family relation , relation with outside world etc . Our faith teaches us who we are and it teaches us something very different from what the world teaches us and that has a profound impact on our lives, the things we choose to do, the way we choose to spend our time, the circles that we get drawn into, and the circles that we stay out of. I think that knowing [I am] a child of God and that I am not just a biological aberration…has had a profound impact on me and on the things I have wanted to do. My faith tells me far more than world tells me about who I am. (We believe) our children are an inheritance unto us from the Lord. In our case, none of them are “accidental” or unwanted, they came as a gift and as great blessings. Heavenly Father has been very powerful in our lives relative to them

Our belief is that the whole world is creation of  God and all are part of it. If we love god we should love all creation of god living being nature and that will create a whole society full of love where all will try to help save others. This  will avoid destruction of nature which will give us many more things in return. This will also bring conviction that we cannot live alone but have to live with all if we have to survive longer in this planet.

GJKS  organize place of worship to God irrespective of religion, believe & custom to strengthen the faith in God. Head  of different religion will deliver discourse on God to the disciple and  ask people to respect other religion and custom

With the development of the GJKS establishment  and funding more activities will be covered as per need of the target areas & people
