About Us

Gram Janakalyan Sanstha  was conceived decades back in late  60s by Mr N C Jana, a Power Plant professional, during his start of career in Chandrapura Thermal Power Station , DVC. During a hunting trip to Gomia & Dania Jungle he came across the difficult way of life, the jungle people are leading. Tiger hunting was not banned in those years.  During this trip with friend Mr J B Kapoor(hunter) and Mr S C Deosharma he came to know that the jungle people are living two months on  agriculture produce , two months on Mouha and other flowers and rest time on roots and leafs of different plants in the jungle. Occasionally they could hunt and any meat  is protein to them whether it is of tiger , snake, mouse, frog etc. About  200 people gathered for free beat (making sound by beating the bush in semicircle to drive the animal to a corridor where the hunter is sitting) . When he enquired about their interest in this free service it came to light  that their interest is to get  the left meat when something gets hunted.  He saw a man with deep  pierced skin in chest and on enquiry came to know that the man fought with a bear and survived. But he could  not get any medicine and used the juice of different medicinal leaves which left the scare on his chest as stitching only could have healed the deep wound.  That experience moved him to a resolution that one day he will try to help these deprived people.

During his long service in different power plants he visited the nearby villages for angling ( he is a angler and later became scuba diver during his overseas service). In all the trips he talked with the village flocks as he could mix with the rural people easily en cashing on his rural background. On every trip on  a Bullet motorcycle  to his home in Khejuri, Medinipur he crossed the villages of Mohua ,  Bokaro, Raghunathpur, Bankura, Bisnupur, Salboni, Godapiasal  etc he saw the difficult life  of people devoid of basic need of life.  His own village in Khejuri where he is grown up was devoid of clean water, sanitation, electricity, medical facility etc. There was some untrained self developed medical men who are the only help in case any medical need. (off course they are a blessing to the rural people as without them there was nothing)

He has seen the miserable condition of colliery labor in colliery  Jharia belt and that of rag pickers in Chembur, Navimumbai & Dhapa Kolkata. Municipal Dumpyard

After 40 years of  his service in India and overseas he visited those places again on exploring trip to develop solar & biomass  power plants . To his surprise he found that  the condition of the rural & jungle people remain same if not deteriorated . There is some development in area of electrification, clean water, medical facility etc but it is too meager to reach the mass and there is many fold increase in unemployment causing many evils in the society, eroding value of life.

Seeing all this he took a resolution to try to help the deprived in whatever way he could  for the rest of his life through an establishment which will continue even after his death .  This resulted establishment of  GRAM JANAKALYAN SANSTHA  to develop Rural Empowerment ( www.repower.co.in)  with the following objective
